Rhinoplasty swelling timeline: when is the final result visible?
After rhinoplasty, most bruising and visible swelling settle within two to three weeks, and the majority of the change is visible by around three months. Deeper swelling, mainly at the tip, keeps resolving for 12 to 18 months, so the final refinement of the result is judged after the first year.
Swelling after rhinoplasty, from day 1 to month 18
A general timeline for surgical rhinoplasty. Every nose heals at its own pace; the schedule of reviews and instructions given at SKMC take precedence over this overview.
| When | What you may notice | What you can usually do |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–7 | Swelling and bruising build up and are usually most marked around days 2–3. An external splint protects the nose, which feels blocked. | Rest with the head elevated, apply cool compresses to the cheeks (not the nose), avoid blowing the nose, and attend splint removal around day 6–7. |
| Weeks 2–3 | Most bruising and visible swelling resolve. The nose can still look full, especially at the tip, and feel stiff or numb. | Many patients return to work and social activities. Walking is fine; avoid strenuous exercise, contact sports and knocks to the nose. |
| Month 1 | Swelling continues to shift from the bridge towards the tip, and the nose can look puffier in the morning. | A gradual return to exercise is discussed at follow-up. Strict sun protection continues through the first month. |
| Month 3 | The majority of the visible change has settled and the bridge looks defined; the tip is still softening. | Most everyday activities have resumed. A follow-up review assesses healing. |
| Month 6 | Most of the swelling has resolved. The tip keeps refining, particularly in thicker skin. | Normal routine, following the schedule of reviews at SKMC. |
| Months 12–18 | The tip reaches its final refinement as deep swelling fully resolves, particularly in thicker skin. | The result is assessed at a review after the first year. |
What the research measured
In a three-dimensional imaging study of 40 primary open rhinoplasties, about two-thirds of the measurable swelling had resolved at one month, 95 percent at six months and 97.5 percent at one year (Pavri et al., 2016). Later three-dimensional analysis has examined how swelling resolves across the different areas of the nose over time (Gordon et al., 2022).
These figures describe a study group, not an individual prediction. A clinical practice guideline recommends documenting satisfaction with nasal appearance and function at least 12 months after rhinoplasty (Ishii et al., 2017).
What can make swelling last longer
- Thick skin. Thick, sebaceous nasal skin is less elastic and is described in the literature as prone to prolonged postoperative swelling, so tip definition can take longer to appear (Cobo et al., 2024). Management is planned before surgery and adapted during follow-up.
- Open or closed approach. The approach is not a reliable predictor on its own: a 2025 meta-analysis of 1,067 patients found no significant difference in postoperative edema between open and closed rhinoplasty (Abi Zeid Daou et al., 2025). The approach is chosen according to the anatomy and what needs to be corrected.
- Revision rhinoplasty. After previous surgery, scar tissue within the skin and soft tissue envelope means swelling usually takes longer to settle. Published protocols for secondary cases focus specifically on reducing and controlling swelling (Cobo, 2026).
- Heat and sun in the UAE. Intense heat and sun exposure can prolong swelling and affect healing incisions. Strict sun protection is advised for the first month: a hat, high-factor sunscreen on healed skin, and shade during the early recovery weeks in Abu Dhabi.
The first days
In the first week, some factors act on early swelling only. A single perioperative dose of corticosteroid reduced swelling and bruising in the first days in a meta-analysis, with no difference at seven days (Coroneos et al., 2016). Piezoelectric (ultrasonic) bone work was associated with reduced early edema compared with conventional osteotomy, on low-quality evidence (Khajuria et al., 2022).
What is normal, and when to seek help
Usually normal: swelling that looks worse before it improves; one side more swollen than the other; a tip that stays swollen longest; numbness or tingling of the nose or upper lip; mild bruising under the eyes; a blocked, congested feeling for a few days.
Contact the team if pain or swelling increases after the first few days instead of improving, with spreading redness, warmth or fever, or discharge from an incision.
Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding that will not stop, difficulty breathing or chest pain, calf pain with breathlessness, or feeling very unwell with a high fever.
