Rhinoplasty recovery: what to expect, week by week
This free, private tracker shows where you are in the normal healing timeline after rhinoplasty and what is typical at your stage. It is educational only — nothing you enter is saved or sent. Enter your surgery date above to see your stage, or read the usual timeline below.
The usual rhinoplasty healing timeline
- Day 0–2 — the first days: the splint is on and swelling is building. Rest, keep your head elevated, and use cool compresses on the cheeks (not the nose).
- Day 3–6 — peak swelling: swelling and bruising are usually at their most around day 2–3, then begin to plateau.
- ~Day 7 — cast comes off: the splint is usually removed around day 7; a brief rebound of swelling is normal, bruising fades and many people return to work.
- Week 2–4: most bruising has gone and swelling shifts from the bridge toward the tip. Light activity is fine; avoid strenuous exercise and knocks to the nose.
- Month 1–3: roughly half to two-thirds of the swelling has settled; the bridge looks more defined while the tip still holds swelling.
- Month 3–6: around 70–80% of swelling has resolved and the structure feels more stable.
- Month 6–12: about 90% of swelling is gone by 6 months; the nose continues to refine and the shape is close to final.
- Year 1 and beyond: the shape has largely settled; final tip definition refines with subtle changes up to 18 months — longer for revision cases or thicker skin.
What's normal, and when to seek help
Usually normal: swelling that looks worse before it improves; one side more swollen than the other; a tip that stays swollen longest; numbness or tingling of the nose or upper lip; mild bruising under the eyes; a blocked, congested feeling for a few days.
Contact the team if pain or swelling increases after the first few days instead of improving, with spreading redness, warmth or fever, or discharge from an incision.
Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding that will not stop, difficulty breathing or chest pain, calf pain with breathlessness, or feeling very unwell with a high fever.
Questions
How long does rhinoplasty recovery take?
The splint is usually removed around day 7 and most bruising fades within two weeks. Around 70–80% of swelling settles by 3–6 months and about 90% by 6 months, while the tip keeps refining for up to 12–18 months — longer for revision cases or thicker skin.
Is swelling after rhinoplasty normal?
Yes. Swelling usually peaks around day 2–3 and can look worse before it improves, then shifts from the bridge toward the tip over the following weeks. One side can be more swollen than the other, and the tip stays swollen the longest.
When should I contact my surgeon after rhinoplasty?
Contact the team if pain or swelling increases after the first few days, or with spreading redness, warmth, fever, or discharge from an incision. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding that will not stop, difficulty breathing or chest pain, or calf pain with breathlessness.
